Survey: 76 Percent of Small Business Owners Remain Optimistic About Growth in 2012

j2 global small business survey resultsWhat double dip recession? This is a question small business owners seem to be asking, based on the results of a recent survey done by j2 Global, Inc.

According to the survey results, things are looking up for small business owners, with 76% of respondents expressing optimism about their company's growth potential for the remainder of 2012. 

Less than 7% are not optimistic, while 17% will wait to express their opinion after the November presidential election. Age and industry were key drivers of the optimism, with Millennials (32 years old and younger) expressing the highest degree of optimism.j2 Global small business survey infographic

As far as industry segments go, real estate, advertising and financial businesses were the most optimistic.

The results largely reflect the mindset of small businesses with 1-5 employees. 82% of survey respondents fit this profile. (10% of survey respondents have 5-10 employees, 6% have 11-50 employees, and 2% have 50+ employees.)

In addition to the business trend data, the survey also confirmed that small businesses are highly active on the social web, and different market segments are gravitating towards different social media outlets:

  • 37% of respondents claim that Facebook is the most important social media platform for their business. The number two and three slots were filled by LinkedIn at 24% and Google+ at 18%.
  • The popularity of social media networks varied widely by industry. Facebook is most popular with restaurants, LinkedIn is used most by consultants, and Google+ has been embraced by medical professionals. In addition, eCommerce businesses rely on Twitter and YouTube is the top choice of technology firms.
  • Despite the growth of the social sharing site Pinterest, it was rated the least valuable business platform in the survey, coming in at 1%.
